Inspiring Audio has used the power of radio to teach children at home and abroad the importance of heart health. The 9 month project, ‘Count the Beats’, targets children in the UK and military families abroad in the British overseas bases.
The project involved hosting three workshops for children aged six to twelve about living a healthy heart lifestyle. Learning from the workshops, Inspiring Audio created a series of ten 3 minute audio programmes to explore the structure and workings of the heart, and ten ‘Heart Smart’ Fastfiles packed with fun heart facts, plus tips and activities to help children minimise possible heart conditions. These quick fire features are designed to inspire families how fun being heart healthy can be.
The audio series was broadcast on Fun Kids, the UK’s only radio station dedicated to children, and remain available to listen again online and for download through iTunes. They are also available to radio stations across the UK.
Chris Suckling says: “We know this new audio series will be a great way to teach kids the importance of keeping their hearts healthy. By exploring heart conditions, the series will help demystifying what can be a scary subject. We are aware of the struggle to engage children with important facts about the heart and also the lack of audio content available to them and we think this is a great way to help children with how to look after their hearts.”
Barbara Harpham, National Director at Heart Research UK says: “This is such a unique project that we’re really excited to fund. It’s important for children to have as many easily accessible resources as possible so they can learn about how to look after their hearts and live longer, healthier, happier lives.”
