Windrush Day programme
Our project began with an initial programme released on Windrush Day – 22nd June, introducing children to Windrush Day and what Windrush means, with a call for action for children to participate in our Windrush Series. Presented by broadcaster and musician YolanDa Brown.
Fun Kids created online Windrush Day resources in their popular ‘Top Ten’ activity.
Windrush Series
10 part audio series to engage and inspire children to explore and celebrate the what, how and why of the Windrush Generation, presented by YolanDa Brown, and supported by 20-year-old Henry Tenyue, a musician of Jamaican descent.
We worked with children in Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham and London to help us deliver the project, recording them talking about their grandparents, families and the broader Windrush Generation and community, which we included within each programme helping bring the stories to life in an inspiring and life affirming way, and building community pride.
The programmes, as well as telling the story of the Windrush Community, the voyage of MV Empire Windrush and the contribution the Windrush Generation have made to British economic, social and cultural life, also covered topics including what is migration, Britain’s links with the Caribbean (focusing on 1930s and 1940s), life on the MV Empire Windrush, difficulties faced by Windrush settlers and their legacy.
